Since September 1st 2015 we have joined forces with VetSouth.
This will mean a different name on the small animal side, the same premises, the same great staff with a few additions, joined veterinary expertise, and more consult times and days for clients.
So come on in and check out our premises and new staff, or feel free to give us a call!
Consultations are by appointment Monday – Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm. Late night consultations on Wednesday evening until 8pm and Saturday 9.30am - 12pm.
Appointments are 15 minutes in duration allowing time for history taking, physical examination of your pet, and discussion on the most appropriate health care plan for your companion.
Out of opening hours, emergencies do happen and we have an emergency service available which we share with Waikiwi Vet Services.
Just ring the clinic phone on (03) 217 6688 and a message will direct you to the duty vet on call.
Cats and dogs have separate hospital wards, as not all cats and dogs enjoy each others company, especially if they are not feeling well! Each ward is heated and disinfected after patient use.
A yearly health check is encouraged for your pets, during which early detection of disease processes can be picked up by your veterinarian. As part of the health check, we will discuss with you the particular risks facing your pet in regards to vaccination needs. Lifestyle, degree of socialisation, boarding facility visits all present different degrees of risk. After such a discussion, the most appropriate vaccination schedule will be instigated.
Both external and internal parasites can cause problems to your family, both animal and human. We have a range of products available to treat both internal and external parasites. Please phone or call in to discuss options with our shop staff on the best options for you.
The insertion of a microchip in dogs is compulsory for non-working dogs in New Zealand, for council control of our canine population. We recommend that your pets new microchip number goes onto the NZ animal register (see www.animalregister.co.nz) that will allow any vet clinic or animal shelter in NZ to contact you in the event of your pet getting misplaced or badly injured, even if you are unaware of it going missing.
Practice policy at Petsouth is to advise desexing of cats and dogs at 6 months of age. Benefits of desexing will be discussed with you during the puppy and kitten vaccination course.
The companion animal team at PetSouth have a sterile surgery room dedicated for “clean surgeries” such as abdominal, soft tissue and orthopaedic procedure’s. A separate surgery room is used for “dirty surgery” such as dentals, grooming and ear cleaning.
To ensure all risks associated with an anaesthetic are minimised, we place all patients on monitoring devices that measure the amount of oxygen in the patients’ blood, its heart rate and blood pressure. Infusion pumps ensure accurate intravenous fluids and pain relief can be delivered for longer and potentially painful procedures. One on one vet nurse monitoring of our patients ensures we literally have a finger on your pets pulse during surgical procedures
Our in-house laboratory can perform blood biochemistry measurements that give vital information about organ function and dysfunction in an unhealthy patient within 15 minutes. This enables us to rapidly investigate and diagnose what disease is happening to your pet. Appropriate treatment can then be delivered in a matter of minutes after presentation to our clinic. Anaemia levels are performed in house, and we can do white and red blood cell counts also. Most other testing we can send to a dedicated veterinary pathology laboratory.
We have an x-ray machine and ultrasound for bone and soft tissue assessment. Diagnostics for urine testing and microscopes for skin, ear and fluid assessment. We can also take blood pressure measurements which help us in treating and managing patients with hypertension (high blood pressure).
Our shop team are well trained in offering advice on the most appropriate species, breed and age related diets for your pet. Prescription diets are available for the nutritional management of disease, and obesity related problems can be managed with several specialised diets designed for effectively helping your pet lose weight if your pet has over indulged during dinner time!
